Extra UGA notes

Some extras that didn’t make it into today’s edition of The Herald.

PENALTY PUNISHMENT: Mark Richt can admit when he made a mistake. And without doubt, the Georgia coach sees the error in his ways regarding penalties.

The Bulldogs are currently last in the Southeastern Conference in penalties through five games. They have been penalized 53 times for 437 yards.

Richt was hesitant with his approach to penalties early in the season. No more.

“I’m wearing them out,” Richt said. “I’m wearing them out physically. Before I was a little reluctant to make such a strong point, I was concerned about some aggressive play and all that kind of thing, but my strategy and my thoughts were wrong. The penalties have not slowed down and have cost us. I did a poor job on the front end of this.”

The Bulldogs have averaged 10.6 penalties a game and while the team doesn’t want to lose its edge, senior defensive back Asher Allen acknowledges it has gone too far. He sees Saturday as the beginning of the turnaround.

Hopefully we can stop,” Allen said. “Cut them in half we be good for us.”

MORENO A GO: Despite an elbow injury sustained during the loss to Alabama, running back Knowshon Moreno will see his normal workload on Saturday.

He practiced on Tuesday and Richt is confident the Bulldogs’ top running back should be able to add to his total of 489 yards on the ground and 10 touchdowns.

“Right now, we think Knowshon will be as full speed as he would have been without that little setback,” Richt said. “There will be a little extra padding on that thing. But I wouldn’t think it would change how we’d play Knowshon. We might be more apt to give Richard (Samuel) a few more carries than he got. We’ve got to watch Knowshon. We have to watch his energy level. He’s been good. Some guys won’t go out no matter what even if they’re just not full speed. If he feels like he needs a break, he’ll let us know, and we’ll make that sub.”
