The Word (11.02.09)
Latest word from UGA? There is none, really. Will Joe Cox remain the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback? Will the Bulldogs win another game after beating Tennessee Tech next weekend? And when will Sanford Stadium finally come up with a name for their hot dogs (C’mon, if Los Angeles can come up with “Dodger Dogs,” surely a school like Georgia with a DOG as its nickname can think of something)…
These are the musings I have at 2 a.m. in the morning when I’m devoid of coffee. Welcome to my world.
Here’s a small UGA bit for you today. From the AJC, Mark Bradley writes how Saturday’s game in Jacksonville was a disaster on so many levels. Click here.
Anyway, here’s your commercial for the day, which is promised in every Scott Chancey blog. Why watch a Heidi Klum commercial?? (I mean, c’mon guys.. she’s HOT!!). Originally, I was looking for a commercial featuring the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez. HOWEVER, I saw him in the same kind of commercial as dear Heidi, but he was wearing the SAME getup as Heidi, air-jamming with Kobe, Tony Hawk and Michael Phelps.
Thank you, Heidi. You cleared my mind of that haunting image.
I said two weeks ago A-Rod would be the MVP of the World Series. Here’s what I typed back then, word for word: ….
“What’s the secret to A-Rod’s postseason success? He no longer thinks about his image. That was shattered when he admitted to steroids. Thinking only about the game, Rodriguez is just having fun. Ask any big-time player after he or she had a big game and the first thing they say usually is along the lines of, “I had fun.” The simpler you make the game, the better it is. When players say “the game slowed down for me,” “I was in a zone,” it’s a comfort zone for the player and there is no pressure.
What was A-Rod’s downfall in the past? The pressure. Trying to say the right things, trying to dress perfect, trying to do something that is just freaking impossible. That is just an afterthought to him, now, and it shows. Derek Jeter has been known to date a celeb or two (Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey), and now Rodriguez is dating actress Kate Hudson. A-Rod and K-Hud — a match made in heaven, huh?
He may have the star girlfriend, but the game to Rodriguez is fun again, just as it was when he first took it up. Don’t be surprised if he is the World Series MVP after the Yankees win it all this year.”
Why repost this now? Well, if you watched Sunday’s Yankees’ Phillies game, you know. Click here. The Yankees responded everytime the Phillies tried to make a game of it. The World Series will end tonight. Just 27 outs until the Yankees 27th world title. Pretty amazing, if you asked me.
There’s another big game tonight — kinda. It will be the first of two meetings between the Falcons and Saints, which could determine homefield advantage through the NFC playoffs. If the Saints were at home three seasons ago for the NFC title game, it would have been them losing against the Colts in the Super Bowl instead of the Bears. In 2006, the Saints clobbered the Falcons in the Superdome’s first game since Hurricane Katrina ravaged it. Tonight, they return to the Superdome for the first Monday night game between them since then. Click here to read THAT story. And in THIS story, you can read some comments from ex-Miller County star Charles Grant, who will start for the Saints tonight at defensive end.
In other NFL news, ex-Monroe star Deion Branch caught his first TD pass of the season on Sunday against Dallas. You can read that story here. He’s very polite, very softspoken off the field. On the field? Oh, he knows how to celebrate a touchdown as you can see here.
There are two things I’m surprised about when it comes to Ga. Tech’s football team. No. 1, that triple-option offense COULD win them the ACC. Second? The defense is struggling. After past defenses had been led by former Bainbridge star James Butler and ex-Dougherty star Daryl Smith, defense used to be the one thing that was consistent there. Now? Not so much as you can see in this story.
From the Albany State beat, yours truly wrote a column about how first-year offensive coordinator Steve Smith’s “Gold Rush” offense has returned. At least, it did in the fourth quarter Saturday in the Rams’ 30-12 win against Morehouse. Explosiveness is something Smith has stressed to his team, opening opportunities for any player on the field to make a big play. Click here for what I have to say on that.
And in case you wanted to know, the Hawks lost against the Lakers. Eh, the regular season goes until April. This is still like the preseason until — like — December? Then, it gets interesting.
Auburn is bowl eligible. The Tigers weren’t last year, and that’s why Gene Chizik is coaching instead of Tommy Tuberville.
And where were the FSU fans at Doak Campbell on Saturday. The Democrat’s Steve Ellis wants to know, too. Click here.
And for your marching band of the day? Click here, which is ANOTHER treat promised in every Scott Chancey blog. Bring it!
