The Word (11.1.09)

I remember a co-worker of mine when I worked in Gainesville Ga., writing the first sentence about a Florida blowout of UGA when they played between the hedges in the mid-1990s. it went something like, “you can open your eyes now, they’re gone.”

I think that wording also applies this year.

No more does Georgia have to worry about Tim Tebow. He’ll be gone after this year. No more does Georgia have to worry about its defense coached by Willie Martinez. HE’LL probably be gone too after this year. The same may go for UGA quarterback Joe Cox.

and NOW, without further delay, I offer you what has become a Scott Chancey staple in sports blogging — your 30-second commercial.

I believe that’s the ONLY way anyone associated with the Florida Gators looked awkward today! Now, onto the stories about the game. Here’s what the AP wrote.  Want to know what the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote? Oh it’s not pretty, if you’re a Bulldogs fan. Columnist Mark Bradley flat out tells it how it is in his column here.  Here is the game story by beat writer Tim Tucker of the AJC. Meanwhile, from Macon, The Telegraph takes note of how the Gators’ stomping of the Dogs have become just the same ol’ song and dance (HAD to put that reference in.. Aerosmith is singing that song on the radio this very minute!) Click here for that game story.

UGA wore black helmets and pants? Oh, ok. That was very fashionable.

The loss wasn’t.

UGA is at a crossroads, and it will be interesting to see how things pan out over there.

At Albany State? The Rams took control in the fourth quarter, winning 30-12 against Morehouse. It was interesting for about a quarter with it seeming that the Tigers just MIGHT pull the upset like it did last year. That wasn’t the case, thanks to Rams RB Demetrice Johnson (I SURE hope the NCAA is calling him “Demetrice” by now instead of “Larry” by now in its national statistics). This guy is an amazing player; fun to watch.  Here is my story from that game. FVSU beat Kentucky St., Tuskegee moved one win closer to clinching the SIAC title with an easy win against Lane. Tuskegee can win the SIAC next weekend with a win against Stillman. Clark Atlanta lost. Also, Benedict beat Stillman as you can read here, And the only proof I could find that Miles beat Concordia-Selma was this.

Ga. Tech? Well, we do know that this triple-option offense is good for building on leads or keeping pace. It’s NOT so good for double-digit comebacks. In the case against Vandy? Tech kept up the pace and THEN blew the ‘Dores away in the second half. Here’s the AP story form that game. And here is what the AJC thinks of the Jackets’ win. Click here. And here’s a blog by the AJC’s Jeff Schultz, who I think is one of the most thought-provoking/downright hilarious sports columnists out there today. And from the Macon Telegraph, here is its take of the win in Nashville. Click here for that.

At Auburn, the Tigers thumped Mississippi, as you can read here. And here’s a blog by the Mobile Register’s Evan Woodbery on the game. Very intriguing how Ole Miss fell from such high, lofty expectations this season. They were supposed to beat Bama. They were SUPPOSED to make a case for playing in Pasadena for the national title. Now? They’re not even close to being that. Also, one more thought on Auburn. Here’s hoping safety Zac Etheridge is OK.

And FSU defeated NC State. It seemed a good game for the few people who were there. Smallest crowd in 16 years at Doak Campbell? Wow! Here’s the game story from the AP. Also, Corey Clark of the Tallahassee Democrat doesn’t seem to have much confidence in the ‘Noles’ defense. Hardly anyone else does, either. It’s going to be a matter of outscoring the other team via high digits. I mean REALLY high, such was the case in today’s 45-42 win against the Wolfpack. And a couple days before FSU’s win, Democrat writer Steve Ellis was wondering how far last week’s win against UNC would carry the ‘Noles, coming back like they did. So far, so good.

Here’s a top-25 roundup for everybody else in the country in FBS play.
