The Word (10.26.09)

First things first.. COMMERCIAL TIME!.

ok, not the typical commercial I usually show ya on here, but the song IS fitting (and I’m sure co-worker and die-hard yankees fan Barry Levine will appreciate it — any guy who brings in a small-wide screen tv into the newsroom so he can watch his Bronx Bombers is a sports fan in MY books!!)

Well, making the World Series has finally paid (AHEM!) off for the Yankees again. What’s it been? Six years? And what have they spent — the equivalent of Fort Knox since the last Series appearance in 2003 to get here? $$$ was not the key this year. If that was the key, the Yankees would have made the past six World Series, too. They actually like each other this time. Chemistry matters. I still don’t think the Steinbrenner brothers understand that, but they got lucky this time. I’m sure in Philly, Jeter and A-Rod will even share a cheese steak together (c’mon, say it with me… “AWwwwwwwwwww….”).

My analysis of the Series? First things first, the Yanks have to shut down the Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins. I’m sure they don’t want any more dramatic comebacks fueled by Rollins as you can see here. It should be interesting to watch the closer battle between Philly’s Brad Lidge and the Yanks’ Mariano Rivera. In the World Series, offense is never as important as pitching. I think Cole Hamels will recapture his postseason form from last year, and maybe Alex Rodriguez’s postseason magic has finally worn out.

My pick? Phillies in 6 (sorry, Barry!).

Now, onto college football. Who would’ve thunk the Tuskegee Tigers could drive basically the length of the field against the Albany State Rams’ defense to win at Albany Municipal Coliseum? That was just one instance I’m sure fans were not expecting during the Rams’ 21-19 loss that put Tuskegee in control of its own destiny in the SIAC championship race. It was a huge opportunity to make a statement, and the Rams were unable to come through, as my column today talks about.

And where’s Jessica Simpson when you need her? I bet the Falcons wished she was still there in the box, cheering on Tony (Romeo?) Romo. What’s the long-term effect of her not hanging all over him anymore? That remains to be seen. All I DO know is that he played pretty darn well against the Falcons. Although “Matty Ice” is the Falcons’ QB of the future, he really had not dealt with the kind of defensive pressure Dallas threw at him Sunday — and the Cowboys especially threw ex-Falcon Keith Brooking at ‘em and Brooking had the last laugh. And here’s a story on Romo frustrating the Falcons’ defense.

Here’s what happened in the rest of the NFL

Also, Georgia Tech is still basking in its win against Virginia. Here’s a story by the AJC on Jonathan Dwyer. And if the Jackets win their final two ACC games, they punch their ticket to the conference championship game held in Tampa.

Here are the football polls from the BCS, AP, USA Today and Harris poll. Why the Harris poll you ask? It took the place of the AP poll in the BCS equation, which pulled away from the BCS equation a few years ago.

As you could see in the Tech story posted earlier, there was a tidbit about Auburn sticking with QB Chris Todd — for now. Here is more Auburn coverage from The Birmingham News. Also, the Mobile Register reported that the Tigers even skipped practice Sunday to spend extra time on film.

At Tallahassee, The Democrat revisits that long TD catch against North Carolina on Thursday.

And of course, the UGA-Fla rivalry is getting ready to make its journey to Jacksonville, and here’s an interesting note — Georgia is facing a No. 1-ranked team for only the fourth time. And did Gators coach Urban Meyer used to be a UGA fan?? Find out here.

and it seems like Jimmie Johnson is getting closer and closer to winning his fourth Cup points title in a row

Now, back to the local coverage, here’s a continuation of the small-college notebook I wrote recently, writing about where the Darton men and women’s soccer teams stand as they get ready for the region tourneys this weekend.

And now, the college marching band of the day.

Now…

GO GET ‘EM!!

The Yankees basically BUY a championship by stealing other team’s best players thru free agency. These free agent signees are why the Yankees win. Mark Texeira,Arod,Sabathia, and Burnett (along with Jeter,Pettitte,Cano, and Rivera Yankee home grown talents) are the stars.
Tonight’s pitching matchup of Cliff lee and C.C. Sabathia both former Cleveland Indians shows how good the Indians would be today if they could afford to keep the players their system develops. The same applies to K.C. Royals who have lost Carlos Beltran and Johnny Damon among others in free agency. It is unfair to allow the Yankees a $300 million dollar payroll compared to the Royals $30 million dollar payroll. Just go ahead and give the Yankees the World Series. They already BOUGHT it…

7 months later we can see that your predictions were a little off, but the amount of detail and time you probably put into analysis both teams is undeniable. Great read!
