Remember ASU’s Adrian Arango?

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

He made the game-winning field goal that gave Albany State its only victory to date against Valdosta State in 2004. The win happened in the regular season, and the two teams met again in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, and the Blazers won that game and eventually their first national championship. Georgia’s Owens lost for year/MAC week

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

The worst case scenerio came true for Georgia as senior defensive tackle Jeff Owens was lost for the season. Tests confirmed a torn ACL and he will be redshirted this year.

It will be nice to have his talent back next year, but he will be missed this season, both on the field and in the locker room.

He was a significant leader on the team and, personally, I will miss him as he was one of the nicest guys I’ve interviewed this season. He attended media days along with receiver Mohamed Massaquoi and certainly lit up the room.

As for the rest of the Bulldogs, they will be back at it Monday in preperation for Saturday’s game against against Central Michigan.

Now, I am an alum of Ohio University, a proud MAC institution, whose football program is as scary as the 30,000 people who invade campus for its Halloween celebration every year. However, the MAC as a whole has a history of pulling early season upsets. And thus has spawned my favorite phrase to utter any time one of the MAC teams shows up on the schedule: DON’T SLEEP ON THE MAC!!!

So, this week, I will count down to Gameday with the Top Five reasons not to sleep on the MAC beginning with No. 5 tomorrow. Come back and check it out.

FSU NOTES

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Hey guys, my apologies, but if you are looking for my Florida State notes in today’s paper I mentioned earlier on the blog, there was so much gridiron action Saturday that unfortunately the ‘Noles’ notes will run Monday instead. I talked to Lee County coach David Johnson on Saturday, and he is obviously excited about the Trojans’ presence in Tallahassee.

Stay tuned!

ASU 27, SHAW 10

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

The Rams rolled to victory in their season opener. Although the Rams gained only 198 yards total offense, Albany State had its share of big plays by receiver Robert Taylor, who caught two touchdown passes. And although starting quarterback Kisan Flakes played the majority of the game, the Rams’ willingness to also use Jackson State transfer A.J. McKenna down the road could turn into a quarterback controversy.

 We’ll see…….

 more in Sunday’s paper.

Yours in sports,

Scott
